Snakes
Snakes may use sheltered areas or follow prey near buildings; keep away from any sighting and seek advice before considering lawful action.

Snakes found around a home or compound can be difficult to identify from a distance, so do not approach to inspect one. They may use gaps, sheltered corners or untidy areas for access or cover, while prey such as rodents, frogs and insects can make a property attractive. In Accra, a sighting can be alarming, but keeping distance is the safest immediate response.
Do not try to kill or handle a snake, and do not use fire, smoke or chemicals. Keep still and calm, move children and pets away, and seek suitable help without approaching. Crepps can inspect likely entry points and advise on safer next steps. Where removal is appropriate, a careful assessment should guide safe, lawful action by an authorised person. Prevention remains the first priority, with follow-up advice to reduce the chance of further contact at home.
Signs
A reported sighting is the clearest sign. Snakes may be seen crossing a compound, close to ground-level gaps, in long grass or beside debris. Do not move closer to confirm its identity. Keep people and pets away and seek advice from a safe distance.
Why it matters
A snake sighting can create risk if someone approaches, corners or tries to kill it. Some snakes can bite, and species are difficult to identify safely at close range. Rodents, frogs and insects may attract predators, so reducing prey and cover can help lower encounters.
The IPM approach
Our first step is an assessment from a safe distance, with attention to entry points, shelter and possible prey. We advise on exclusion and reducing attractions. If removal is appropriate, next steps must be safe and lawful, and carried out by an authorised person. We do not advise handling, killing, fire, smoke or chemical use.
Prevention
Seal gaps around doors, walls, pipes and drains; clear clutter, debris and long grass near buildings; and reduce rodent and insect activity. Keep compounds tidy and make storage areas less attractive as shelter. If you see a snake, keep away and call for suitable help.
