    Mosquitoes

Mosquitoes develop in water and may bite indoors or outdoors; some can transmit infections, including malaria, depending on species and context.

Mosquitoes are small flying insects whose immature stages develop in water. Adults may be noticed outdoors around gardens, compounds and shaded resting places, or indoors where they can enter through open doors, windows and other gaps. In warm parts of Ghana, mosquito activity is a familiar concern, while water collecting in containers or poorly draining areas can provide places for breeding. Different mosquito species have different habits, so it is useful to consider where people are being bitten and whether there are nearby places where water is standing.

Beyond being irritating, mosquito bites can transmit serious infections, including malaria, depending on the mosquito and the local disease context. A useful response looks beyond adult insects and considers the water sources and routes that support them. Crepps can inspect the property and its surroundings, identify likely breeding or resting areas and explain targeted options appropriate to the site. Residents can support the plan by checking containers and drains and maintaining screens where possible. Where activity persists, monitoring helps show whether the chosen measures are addressing the source or whether the plan should be adjusted.

    Signs

Biting at dawn and dusk, standing water holding larvae, adults resting in dark, damp corners.

    Why it matters

Apart from the nuisance, mosquitoes can carry serious diseases such as malaria. According to UNICEF, nearly every minute a child under 5 dies of malaria. Mosquitoes also transmit other diseases, such as St. Louis and West Nile encephalitic viruses, dengue fever, chikungunya, and yellow fever.

    The IPM approach

We survey for breeding sites, remove or treat standing water, and use targeted treatments of resting areas only where needed.

    Prevention

Empty containers that collect water, clean gutters and drains, and use screens on windows and doors.
