Hornets
Hornets are large social wasps that may nest in sheltered or elevated places; activity near people warrants distance and careful assessment.

Hornets are large social wasps, and their nests may be found in sheltered or elevated places around buildings and compounds. A hornet seen outdoors does not by itself show where a nest is located, and identification from a quick glance can be difficult. Activity near roof spaces, trees, outbuildings or wall openings should be observed from a safe distance rather than investigated closely. In Accra, residents may notice them around outdoor spaces where there is shelter or a source of food. The exact species and nest position affect what action, if any, is suitable.
A nest close to people can present a sting risk if disturbed, and some individuals may experience severe allergic reactions. Do not disturb or spray a nest yourself. Keep children and pets away, call Crepps and let the team assess whether removal is appropriate. The inspection can establish the location, activity and access concerns before a recommendation is made. Avoid sealing holes or approaching a nest, since activity may be inside a cavity or another concealed space. If someone is stung and has difficulty breathing or another severe reaction, seek urgent medical help.
Signs
Repeated hornet traffic to the same roof edge, tree, shed or opening may point to a nest nearby. A single insect passing through does not confirm nesting at your property. Note the location from a safe distance and do not approach to investigate.
Why it matters
Hornets are social wasps and may sting if a nest is disturbed or they feel threatened. Stings can be painful, and serious allergic reactions are possible. Keep children and pets away from suspected nests, and do not try to remove or spray one yourself.
The IPM approach
We inspect activity from a safe position, identify the likely nest site and assess its proximity to people and pets. We explain precautions and whether removal is appropriate. Any action is chosen for the site after assessment, with monitoring where useful, not by disturbing a nest first.
Prevention
Keep food waste covered and limit access to sheltered building gaps where practical, without blocking an active nest entrance. Do not disturb or spray a suspected nest. Keep children and pets away, observe from a distance and call us for an assessment.
